Public Art Initiative

The city of Mission, British Columbia, is home to a collection of public art pieces. Unfortunately the art is not widely known about, mainly due to little to no awareness being made about the art, a lack of interest in the art, and little engagement with visitors and community members. For this project, we were to come up with a fresh idea to get the people living in Mission excited about the public art in their city! As a class and individually, we researched what designers have done in the past to promote public art in their own cities. Through this research, I found that it would be most important to reach the children living in Mission, so I created this solution based around that. This is Art Mission, a sticker book created to promote the public art in Mission, British Columbia. The sticker book includes to-scale illustrations of the main roads where the public art would be found. The children are engaged with both their town and the art as they learn about the art while they play with their stickers book. In designing this sticker book and map, it is my goal that young children and their families can be engaged in Mission’s public art, also learning the story behind it. Getting them excited about the art at an early age will allow them to make art themselves and be involved with there community.
